Academic Programs for Schools, Students, Educators, and Individuals

“…we wanted to thank you and all of the staff for another great experience at PEEC this year!!  The students, teachers and adults had a great and very worthwhile time….your staff delivered an exceptional educational experience…”

Christine Broderick
Lehman Intermediate School, Bushkill, PA

PEEC has the distinction of being one of the largest and longest running residential environmental education centers in the northeastern United States. It is a special place for school groups, youth groups, educators and individuals interested in learning about and enjoying nature. Approximately 10,000 school students and 2,000 educators study at PEEC annually representing all grade levels in both public and private schools from the urban, suburban and metropolitan areas of NY, NJ and PA.

PEEC’s education programs are centered on our Core Curriculum which is designed to provide a holistic presentation of the natural world.  The Core Curriculum includes sessions focused on plants, earth, water, animals, and nocturnal natural history as well as a sprinkling of recreation activities such as hiking, orienteering or canoeing.

In response to recent trends and concerns in education and the worldwide community, PEEC programs are designed to provide positive experiences in nature for all participants.  Research and general observation shows that people in modern societies are experiencing a disconnect with the natural world.  Even as we gain increasing awareness of environmental issues through media coverage of climate change and associated topics, children and adults are spending less and less time outdoors.

At PEEC, our hope is that providing pleasant experiences outdoors will foster a concern for the environment and inspiration to take action.  Going a step further, as students learn more about ecology, sustainable practices, community concepts, and interpersonal skills, they become equipped to get involved in their home communities.
